Driving Visitors to Astoria/Warrenton for a Quarter Century
Case Study: Astoria Warrenton Chamber of Commerce
Driving Visitors to Astoria/Warrenton for a Quarter Century
Astoria/Warrenton Chambers came to us 15 years ago looking to spark tourism in the region. A historic town with a delicious seafood scene, unique festivals, noteworthy film culture and more, Astoria's potential was there, it just needed to educate and reach the right consumers. That's where Maxwell came in, and since beginning our marketing efforts, the region has experienced increases each year in travelers and dollars spent in the area (outside of 2020 Covid year).

INSIGHTS
Travelers look for varied experiences and opportunities to explore close to home, especially during the winter months. They want to feed their souls with new experiences, but they travel for different reasons – some for art & culture, some for food, others for history and adventure, and some for R&R. Finding the balance between promoting broad areas of interest with specific itineraries, and those key attributes that appeal to all, helps to attract a diverse (and growing) group of travelers.
OBJECTIVES
Utilize effective marketing channels that inspire travel – including social media, media relations, paid media and influencers/creators – to inspire shoulder-season visits and extended stays in Astoria/Warrenton.
STRATEGIES
Working with a relatively small marketing budget, that we stretch in order to reach new and existing travelers, we:
- Geotarget digital ads to PNW travelers who can drive to the region (and are most likely to travel there)
- Highlight imagery and itineraries that appeal to various types of travelers – foodies, adventurers, movie buffs, history lovers and more – on social and e-news
- Secure earned media stories and minimal paid ads that highlight the region in the publications that inspire
- Partner with trusted, regional lifestyle and travel influencers, often followed for their recommendations and itineraries, to visit and share their regional go-tos
- Vet and secure radio and print ads that reach regional travelers
RESULTS
- Increased visits and spending year over year
- 2B+ impressions (media, influencer, social ads)
- 10K/m average website visits
- 40% open rate on enews
